Artist Bios

Jimmy Abeita (B.1947)
Jimmy was born and raised in New Mexico. He attended the American Academy of Art in Chicago, a two year course that he completed in nine months. In the 1970’s he moved to the Navajo Reservation in Arizona where he began painting full time. Abeita has won numerous awards nationwide.

Charles Partridge Adams (1858-1942)
Adams moved to Denver, Colorado at the age of 18. He began dabbling in art after a three month camping trip in the Rocky Mountains. Although he spent time with many artist friends, Charles was primarily self taught. In 1886 he had his first public exhibit in Denver, showing off his talents in both oil and watercolor. In the summer of 1905 he built a studio in Estes Park, a building which still stands to this day. Adams traveled extensively though out the western United States, painting the landscapes on his way. In 1917 he fell ill and moved to the warmer climates of California where he began painting seascapes. Although he never achieved the same success as life as an artist in Colorado, Adams continued painting until his death in 1942

Robert Wesley Amick (1879-1969)
Amick was born in Canon City, Colorado amidst cowboys, prospectors and Indians. He studied law at Yale and practiced law for two years before becoming an artist. He worked as a printmaker, illustrator and painter. His paintings of landscapes, horses and western life (his childhood) became so popular that several were printed for the public school system.

Ina Annett (1901-1990)
Renowned painter of South Western landscapes, Ina also worked as an art teacher at the University of Oklahoma. She was a student of Doel Reed and was influenced by her associate Georgia O’Keefe. She is listed in “Who Was Who In American Art.

Ruth Monro Augur (1886-1967)
At age 19, Ruth won an art scholarship to the New York School of Art where she studied under William Merritt Chase. Although she loved fine art, she never pursued it full time. She held many jobs in publishing and in 1937 won the commission to paint murals in Enid, Oklahoma. In 1937 Augur had completed a 1136 square foot mural of the history of the Cherokee strip run for the Enid Courthouse.

Bill Barrett (B.1934)
Barrett received his B.S., M.S. and M.F.A. from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. His cubistic bronzes are collected and exhibited on an international scale.

Lawrence Lorus Barrett (1897-1973)
In 1920 Barrett enrolled in the Broadmoor Academy where he learnt along side John Carlson and Robert Reid. He went on to teach lithography and etching at the school. Barrett co-authored the book “How to Draw and Print Lithographs.”

Thomas Hart Benton (1889-1975)
As a youth, Benton was somewhat of a loner. He studied early art the Art Institute of Chicago under Frederick Oswald followed by studies abroad. He spent several years in France, and when his father would no longer support him, he returned to America and settled in New York. Upon his return he experimented in many different artistic styles including post-impressionist and synchromist. Unfortunately most of the examples of his work from this era were destroyed in a fire. He supported himself as a muralist and also taught at the Art Students league, where he made quit in impression on a young Jackson Pollock. In 1935 he moved to Kansas City to work full time on his art.

Emil James Bisttram (1895-1976)
Bisttram is renowned as one of the Southwest's leading painters. He was Hungarian born but grew up in New York City. Bisttram opened the nations first freelance advertising art agency in 1916. He went on to open Taos' first commercial art gallery and founded the Transcendental Art movement. His murals can be found throughout the country including the Department of Justice Building in Washington DC.
